Junior Dynamo Beginning Crochet Necklace

My 5 year old, Mims, is learning to crochet.  It is very fun, but it's also pretty challenging for her.   She wanted to make a project using the recycled #6 plastic shrink art that she made.  I wanted to help her make something to show off her new chaining skills!  So we made a:

Junior Dynamo Crochet Necklace
Supplies:
1 shrink plastic charm, made with a single hole at the top (go HERE to learn how to make them!)
Small amount of crochet thread, craft cord, or embroidery floss (we used craft cord)
Size G crochet hook
Scissors

Slide the charm onto the cord.  Make a slip knot in the starting end of the cord.

Make 50 chains (approximately 9").  Slide the charm up to the hook.  Make your next chain with the thread from behind the charm, so that the charm dangles from the bottom loop.
(This is one of the pieces that she made out of the curvy sides of the plastic sandwich container!
We were both surprised by how nice and flattened out it became after it was baked!)
Chain 50 more stitches.  Fasten off.  It's cute and fun, and it was good for helping the environment!  It's never too early to start teaching our kids to recycle!

xoxo

  1. Awww, you know I have a special fondness for shrink plastic (and sometimes wonder if I should have been a Shrink Plastic Engineer rather than a Mad Crochet Scientist). Love this! Recycling AND fun! You've been doing a lot with recycling and crochet over here so I think it's about time I do a little shout-out to you and your blog.
